The ancestry of Kilimanjaro Kinukamori Safaris (Kili-Kinu Safaris) stems back to the opening of Kibo Hotel in the village of Marangu in 1886, just one year after Germany had annexed the territory. The hotel was in existance before the first recorded summit of Kilimanjaro by German geographer Hans Meyer in 1889. Marangu Route was the first route used to climb Kilimanjaro and is still a very popular route. Kibo Hotel became the base for climbers and was the first company to organize climbs. In 1973, Kilimanjaro was inaugurated by Tanzania's first president Julius Nyerere. A huge crowd had gathered for the event and perched high in a tree witnessing the ceremony was the now Managing Director of Kili-Kinu Safaris, Alpha Moshi as a ten year old. Alpha grew up on the mountain and from an early age was involved in Mt Kilimanjaro tourism, working through Kibo Hotel. In 1988 ex US President Jimmy Carter and his family went on a Kilimanjaro trek and Alpha Moshi was part of his mountain support team. As the years wore on, Kilimanjaro treks through Kibo Hotel flourished but the hotel itself was showing its age and was losing much of its grandeur. As the hotel & tour company owner's health was failing, he was worried about the future of the Kilimanjaro treks so he requested that Alpha take this business and run it independent of the hotel. This company morphed into Kilimajaro Kinukamori Safaris, no longer related to the hotel itself. Kili-Kinu Safaris offers a full range of services including Mt Kilimanjaro treks (of course!), Mt Meru treks, northern Tanzanian safaris, and Zanzibar beach holidays.
